The Settlers of Catan
I don’t like board games, but I like The Settlers of Catan. Wired magazine has a great article on the story behind the game:
Along the way, it’s teaching Americans that board games don’t have to
be either predictable fluff aimed at kids or competitive,
hyperintellectual pastimes for eggheads. Through the complex, artful
dance of algorithms and probabilities lurking at its core, Settlers
manages to be effortlessly fun, intuitively enjoyable, and still
intellectually rewarding, a potent combination that’s changing the
American idea of what a board game can be.
Any other fans of Settlers out there? Friends at my church introduced me to it and it has quite the following here at CPC.
Very fun, but very dangerous. I remember when we played many a husband were not allowed to do the moves they wanted due to glaring looks of their wifies ;). Sootosh = Soo and Santosh
For some reason, the German board games seem to be popular in Christian communities these days. Settlers is popular with my group of friends but I don’t really like it, mostly because I am not that good at it. But I have been enjoying a game called “Ticket to Ride” lately. Awesome.
Settlers has been the thing to do with my small group here in Denver. Every possible get together becomes an opportunity to play. (Going away party. Bachelor party. BBQs.) We discuss strategy at length and debate rule variations ad nasuem.
I just got this for Todd for his birthday. We’re fans along with my Dad and most of our small group.
Settlers is a good start. Next up, Puerto Rico, Agricola, Pandemic, and a whole host of German-style games.
Yes…excellent game. And not to sound too much like I have tape on my glasses (as if playing a pioneer sounding game doesn’t do that already)…you can play it online as well called Xplorers (but it’s the same game). Good fun though.
We have quite a competitive settlers situation going on down here in Hollister. Folks in our church love it.
You gotta have the Cities and Knights expansion package and the big board. That’s where the strategy really gets interesting!
Lots of Catan fans in Maryland. Too many.
