My Mom’s Cancer

My mom’s cancer is back. We thought it was gone, but it’s back.
In Date Your Wife I write about my mom’s incredible influence on my life. I also tell the story of my mom and dad’s marriage, my mom’s breast cancer diagnosis twelve years ago, and how God used the cancer to bring fresh life to their marriage. I’ve already received hundreds of emails and comments about the impact Date Your Wife is having on men, women, and marriages. Many of these have included comments about my mom and dad’s story.
At the same time that this book is being released we’ve found out my mom’s cancer is back. I’m writing this with tears because I love my mom so much and I hate seeing her in pain and I don’t want her to die. We walked this road twelve years ago.
The cancer is in her bones. Radiation and chemotherapy are beginning. My mom is a fighter and is fighting this. She’s hopeful. My dad is by her side, loving the socks off of her and taking such great care of her. I’m proud of him. The prayer is that the cancer stays confined to her bones. If that remains the case, she could have many more years with us. I want my three sons to grow up and have many years enjoying and being influenced by the mom that has so influenced me.
My mom is the one who led me to place my faith in Jesus. God used my mom to bring me to him. I don’t know how anyone faces death without Jesus. Jesus conquered death and the only way we can conquer death is through him.
Whatever happens with my mom, it’s a win-win situation. If my mom lives another few years or twenty years, it’s a win: she gets more time to enjoy life on earth and help others (in addition to being a wife, mom, and grandmother, she’s a Christian counselor), and we get more time with her. And if my mom dies soon, she gets to be with Jesus sooner and worship him in a cancer-free, sin-free environment. You can’t lose with Jesus.
But I want more time with my mom. I believe she has work left to do before she goes home.
So, I’d like to ask all of you who read this to join me in praying for Joan Buzzard. Pray that the cancer retreats, that my mom has many more years to impact others for Christ, and that her pain would subside.
Friends, don’t waste your life. At nearly 58 years old my mom has already left an incredible legacy, a legacy that hinges on Jesus and his gospel. Life is a gift. Let’s steward it well. We will all die. But not all of us will live an abundant life and leave behind a legacy that impacts multiple generations. Our world needs more Joan Buzzards.
Cancer kills. Jesus resurrects. And that changes everything.

Thank you Son! I love you so much…..I thank the Lord he choose me to be your momma. Prayer is huge……
Dude, I love it! This is really powerful! I’m very thankful for your mom because she was instrumentally used by the Lord to help you grow into who you are today. And your ministry is meaningful to your congregants. We love you, man. And we love your mother just as much.
We’ll all be praying, I’m sure!
Psalm 121: I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills. From where comes my aid? My help is from the Lord who made heaven and earth.
Psalm 46 God is our refuge and strength. A very present help in trouble.
My heart goes out to you. I am a 4 year breast cancer survivor. My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’s blood…. I will pray for you….
Joan (and Justin),
This is hard news and I am so sorry to hear about this. Know that Missy and I will be praying hard for you and your recovery. God is good and he is faithful. You already know that. I am trusting that His plan is better than ours. Love you. Praying for you. Hope, by God’s grace, you beat this evil disease.
Love,
Rob and Missy
We will be praying for your mom’s full, miraculous recovery!
Our world does need more Joan Buzzards. But it also needs THE Joan Buzzard. We are praying for your amazing mom!
I’m sorry to hear about your mom, Justin. My mom has had two bouts with breast cancer, and, as a result, started a cancer support group at Neighborhood Church in Castro Valley (the great big three crosses church on the hill at the 238 interchange). It’s a group based on prayer and has an incredible ministry to those with cancer or supporting someone with cancer. If your mom lives near Castro Valley, this could be a great and encouraging resource for her. We serve a big God–nothing is impossible with Him.
We will be praying. God’s peace comes through prayer. His ways are not always our ways, but His ways are always for our best. That being said, He is a God of healing, and we will ask Him to heal your mom!

You can definitely count on prayers here. It is my understanding that our praise to God the Father and our prayerful concern for others is a great part of the healing ministry. We are to love others as we do ourselves. This helps me take my mind off my own health problems and have a mind-set for what God can do and is doing for other believers.
My dear Father God, it is with deep gratitude that my praise and adoration is expressed to You for Your Spirit that is alive in Justin’s dear Mother. Continue to lead her forward in your plan for influencing many more lives for Christ’s sake. May it be Your will for (us) to be glad about this, even though it may now be necessary for (us) to be sad for awhile because of the many kinds of trials (we) suffer.(1 Peter 1:6 TGNV) Because we love you, may we spend the rest of our lives here on earth in reverence for (Jesus) Him. Amen
Our family is praying daily!
Both your mom and you give a powerful testimony to the grace of Christ. We are praying for you and your mom.
For Him,
Craig
Justin,
Joan counseled me for years when I lived in Sacramento. She had (and continues to have) a tremendous impact on my life and faith. I frequently ponder words she shared with me years ago. I just love her to pieces. I am so sad to learned that her cancer has returned. I will be praying for her recovery and healing during this time. Much love!

Justin,
You know my heart and prayers are with you and your family. What a blessing to have a son so devoted to his mom, family and his Lord. She has done an amazing job as a mom. This is our heart as mothers of boys. Life is fragile, but our God is so powerful. I pray that the peace of God passes all understanding in your family’s life at this time. Your transparency ministers to my heart.

Justin – I am sorry to hear about your mom. It is definately heartbreaking when someone you dearly love is going through this difficult phase in life (I lost my mom to cancer last year) Thank you though, for reminding me that with Jesus this is a win – win stiuation. I’ll be praying for her recovery and that she will spend many more years with you and your family.
Summon your power O God. Show us your strength, O God, as you have done before. Psa. 68:28 Also beginning today Xeloda 500mg for cancer returned the second time to chest wall. Praying that this will not interfer with eye surgery needing to be done.
Think ab Moses ….Did he figure out all their needs befoe leaving Egypt? I think not! Moses believed in God. God took care of these things for him. Let us believ e God has no problem taking care of all our needs fighting cancer. PTL !
