Jack Bauer & the Gospel
My Labor Day is almost over. It's been a great day. I haven't labored at all. I've spent the bulk of my day watching season 1 of 24.I'm finding that 24's main character, Jack Bauer, occasionally communicates good theology. So far, the best piece of theology from Jack concerns the doctrine of sin. While speaking to a kidnapper who wasn't owning up to his unrighteous behavior, Jack said: “Son, part of getting a second chance is taking responsibility for the mess you made in the first place.” Go Jack! Here we see Jack calling a man to confession of sin, to taking responsibility for things that are his fault. I'm glad Jack and 24 speak to us about the doctrine of sin, but I'm more thankful for how Jesus Christ has handled Jack's doctrine of sin:On the cross, Jesus went further than Jack. On the cross, Jesus took responsibility for a mess that was not his fault: our sin.
