August CT--New Perspective On Paul
I just read Simon Gathercole's lead article in this month's issue of CT, "What Did Paul Really Mean?," an analysis of the doctrine of justification by faith and the new perspective on Paul. This is a great article. I couldn't find an online link to the article, so you'll have to track down a copy of the magazine. If you're new to the topic of the new perspective on Paul this will be a bit of a heavy read for you, but it's well worth your effort. With this article Gathercole provides a very fair critique of the new perspective and upholds the traditional doctrine of justification by faith, while simultaneously pointing out valuable contributions that new perspective scholarship has brought to bear on this cardinal doctrine.Gathercole's take on the new perspective mirrors my own. And, if you're a fan or a critic of N.T. Wright (I'm both), this article will help you better discern your assessment of Wright's writings on justification.PS. In additional CT news, when I returned from vacation yesterday I came across an email from Collin Hansen stating that he's stepped down in his role as Associate Editor at CT. I'm excited for what lies ahead for Collin, but sad that he'll no longer be writing in a full time capacity for CT. He has been my favorite CT writer.
