Where Do You Go for Strength?

When you're weak, where do you go to find fresh strength?

  • A human relationship?
  • Status?
  • Past accomplishment/performance?
  • Anxious introspection?
  • ?

Presently, I feel weak. My body aches and leaks. Green stuff appears when I cough. I'm sick.A few days ago, while on a trail run, I sprained my ankle for the 2nd time in a month. I'm limping again.Today, I head in for minor surgery on a recurring ingrown toenail that's causing a lot of pain. I've got a double limp. That's the physical stuff.A variety of other recent factors are leaving me emotionally and mentally weak, exhausted, and drained. I've got perspective, things really aren't that bad, it's just that I'm feeling quite weak.Providentially, in my morning Scripture study I'm working through 1 & 2 Samuel right now. And a few mornings ago I paused over 1 Samuel 30:6b--a sentence speaking to where King David found fresh strength during a period of distress and weakness:

"But David strengthened himself in the Lord his God."

That sentence reminded me that the Lord my God is very strong. That sentence reminded me of the sentence the Lord Jesus, our perfect King, spoke to Paul:

"'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.'"

I'm weak, but it's okay. Though I'm tempted to find fresh strength in false places, I'm finding fresh strength in the Lord my God. His grace is sufficient. His power is made perfect in my weakness. Are you weak?Strengthen yourself in the Lord. Remind yourself of his strength. Soak in the good news: his grace is sufficient for you.Whatever your weakness, his sufficient grace will supply you with sufficient strength.
