Gender Fluidity on the San Francisco Peninsula

In his column in today's San Francisco Chronicle, Same-sex marriage support is young at heart, Mark Morford cites the clear evidence that the recent display of unprecedented levels of support for same-sex marriage in California has come from younger people, especially twentysomethings. Morford argues that this is a result of today's twenytsomethings having grown up with "more fluid notions of gender and sexuality" and "open-minded gender fluidity." I agree with Morford--the fluid, non-distinct, egalitarian notions of gender and sexuality that most young people have grown up with here in the Bay Area (and elsewhere) have opened the door to today's willingness to fundamentally alter what constitutes a marriage.I liked how a member of the twenties ministry that I lead put it this past weekend. During a guy's discussion and prayer time at our twenties retreat, this relatively new Christian expressed how these past two years he's been learning what it means to be a man after having grown up on the San Francisco Peninsula where he was taught that "what it means to be a man and what it means to be a woman is basically the same thing" (ie., "open-minded gender fluidity").This is a challenging and exciting time to be the church, especially in regions that have postured themselves as hubs of gender and sex fluidity (San Francisco Bay Area, D.C., etc.). My prayer is that local churches, especially local church leaders, would humbly, lovingly, and boldly plunge deeper into working out, living, and teaching God's design for his creation:

So God created man in his own image,in the image of God he created him;male and female he created them.-Genesis 1:28
