Fred Sanders, The Deep Things of God

It's rare that a book prompts me to pause reading in order to worship God. Reading Fred Sanders' new book, The Deep Things of God: How the Trinity Changes Everything, led to many spontaneous pauses and praises. This happened a lot in chapter 2, "Within the Happy Land of the Trinity," a 35-page chapter that's worth the price of the whole book. This chapter sums up the message of the book: "The good news of the gospel is that God has opened up the dynamics of his triune life and given us a share in that fellowship."Sanders writes to remind evangelicals of the rich, semi-forgotten Trinitarian foundation that our faith is already built upon, leading the reader through a rediscovery of the glory of knowing the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Many Christians are intimidated by the doctrine of the Trinity. This book can help change that. My bet is that any thoughtful Christian who reads Sanders' book will come away less intimidated by the Trinity and more in awe of our Triune God, and be better able to articulate that awe.
